Moving from WordPress to a custom site: when it is worth it

WordPress is a good platform, and many sites should stay on it. But a business site built on a large theme and many plugins can become difficult to maintain as it grows.

Signs it may be time to move

  • Plugin updates regularly break things
  • You have had malware or spam injected into your site
  • Your pages are slow, even with caching
  • You use only a fraction of what your theme and plugins provide

Each plugin is someone else's code running on your site, and outdated plugins are a common way sites get compromised. Fewer moving parts leave attackers fewer ways in.

What a custom build changes

With a framework such as Laravel, your site contains only the code it needs. You can still have an easy admin panel for pages, blog posts and enquiries. The pages can be much lighter, which helps speed on mobile.

The trade-off is real: new features need a developer, and you still have to keep the framework up to date. If your team depends on adding plugins itself, WordPress may still suit you better.

How to keep your search rankings

Most of the risk in a migration is in how the move is handled.

  1. List every existing URL from your sitemap and Google Search Console.
  2. Keep the same addresses wherever you can.
  3. Add 301 redirects for every page whose address changes.
  4. Move your content, titles and descriptions carefully, keeping what already ranks.
  5. Submit the new sitemap and watch Search Console closely for a few weeks after launch.

A small, temporary change in rankings can happen, but a careful migration keeps it limited.
