When you work with a development company, there are two common ways to engage them. Each suits a different stage of a product.
A project team
You agree on a defined scope, timeline and budget, and the company delivers it. They manage the team and the day-to-day work.
This suits you when:
- The scope is clear and unlikely to change much
- You want a predictable budget
- You do not have time to manage developers yourself
Dedicated developers
You hire one or more developers who work only on your product, usually on a monthly basis. You set their priorities, much like your own employees.
This suits you when:
- Your product will keep growing over many months
- Priorities change often
- You already have a product manager or technical lead
- You want to add skills your in-house team lacks, such as Flutter or Unity
Questions to ask before you choose
- How clear is the scope? Unclear scope usually suits a dedicated team, or a short paid discovery phase first.
- Who will manage the work? Dedicated developers need direction from you.
- How long is the work? A few months of defined work suits a project. Ongoing work suits a dedicated team.
- What happens at the end? Make sure code, documents and access are handed over either way.
You can switch later
Many products start as a defined project for the first version, then move to dedicated developers to keep improving after launch.
